Will Sterling Ranch get Public Schools?

As residents or those looking to build in Sterling Ranch, one question families tend to ask concerns the future of our education infrastructure: When (or if) will Sterling Ranch have its own elementary, middle, or high school? I know how important a good school system can be when considering places to move and have been closely following the developments on this topic.

Current Educational Landscape

Currently, Sterling Ranch families can find a selection of nearby public schools in the surrounding Douglas County School District. There are also a few private options in the community.

Being part of the ThunderRidge feeder area, Sterling Ranch is currently zoned for:

High School: ThunderRidge (about 10 minutes away)

Middle School: Ranch View (next to ThunderRidge)

Elementary School: Roxborough Primary (about 5 minutes away)

Note that Colorado is an open enrollment state, meaning that students can choose to attend the assigned neighborhood school as listed above, or "choice in" to another public school within their district or even outside their district.

Future School Developments

As for whether Sterling Ranch will get its own schools, the answer lies in our community growth and the planning commissions' foresight. Education planning is a detailed process that involves thorough assessments of population growth, future community needs, and logistical considerations such as funding and site selection.

So far, there is no official concrete news on schools. However, the school district publishes a 300+ page plan each year as part of their planning process. We can gather some insights on what might be happening next from the plan that was published this past year.

Starting off, they have identified that new school construction will require the largest investment in the approximately one billion dollar five-year budget. Unfortunately, the school bond measure that was on the ballot this year did not pass in Douglas County, which would have certainly provided well needed funds for new development.

(page 21) In this report, they have identified a new elementary school in Sterling Ranch or Solstice as a 1 to 5 year need. They are also expecting a new joint middle/high school in Sterling Ranch to be needed in the next 6 to 10 years.

As expected, the cost of building new schools is a major obstacle to overcome. In their estimate, the elementary school would cost $60mm, or only $51m if built with "reduced cost components". For the joint middle/high school, we could be looking at a massive cost of $337mm, or $292mm with lower standards - this would be about a third of the 2028-2033 construction budget.. These prices include the estimated inflation for when they will be built.

For the location of these new schools, we could be looking at a local elementary school by the Sterling Center in the empty plot of land near the welcome trailer. This land has been reserved for DCSD use as part of the neighborhood buildout. A similar situation has taken place in the new Solstice development on the other side of Titan Road. They have a reserved school site across from their community clubhouse.

For the middle/highschool, some land has been identified in preliminary plans, but it has not been platted and given to the school district yet.
